The end of the 1930s when former Vice President of the Republic, Raouf Bundhun was born, was a period of great upheaval in Mauritius. The Second World War broke out in 1939 with adverse effects worldwide. The local political scene was bubbling with a new breed of politicians entering the scene.
The Labour Party had been founded in 1936 by Dr. Maurice Curé. Dr. Seewoosagur Ramgoolam had come to the country in 1935 after studies in the UK and had started taking part in the political life of Mauritius.
The 1960s witnessed the acceleration of history. The country was reaching the final stage of its long and daunting journey towards independence. They were to be the most challenging years for those who had been aspiring for freedom and liberty and for the young generation who had joined the struggle. 1967 was to be the crucial year as general elections scheduled in August were to determine the future status of the country.
In this work, author Bhismadev Seebaluck carries us through this distinct period of our history with vivid descriptions of the final steps that led to the birth of Independent Mauritius.
Not as a passive onlooker but as an involved participant, Raouf Bundhun was one of the Young Turks championing the cause of independence.
