International - Books sell well in supermarkets
Historical novels, cookery books, identification books: at the end of May, it was book-time again at Aldi in Germany. But a situation similar to that at Tesco in the UK, a supermarket also hoping to sell more books on the internet, is still a long way from that of Germany’s supermarkets. At Germany’s foodstore discounter Aldi and at its competitor Lidl, books are no more than part of their nonfood special-offer business. But at other supermarket chains like Rewe or Edeka, they are a firm fixture in the so called supplementary category within the overall range. In the process and depending on location and size, the extent of the range of books can sometimes resemble that of a mini-bookshop.
