Challenges facing the book industry worldwide
Frankfurt Book Fair 1,324 industry professionals from 86 countries responded
The organisers of the Frankfurt Book Fair, the world’s largest fair for the book and media industry, have conducted a major survey of book industry professionals, asking respondents to identify the challenges and threats facing the industry, and to predict emerging trends and areas of growth. Feedback from international publishers and retailers identified digitisation as the overriding priority and the single most important challenge facing the industry. Competition from other media and sources of entertainment was named as the biggest threat in an industry where the number of books published continues to increase each year. Asked what the industry will look like in 50 years’ time, only 11 per cent thought the printed book will be obsolete but almost a quarter (23 per cent) predicted the High Street bookseller would no longer exist. And 29 per cent think that China will dominate the industry in the next decade.

Abu Dhabi to Host Major International Copyright Conference in 2010
Abu Dhabi has been chosen as the location of the International Publishers
Association’s 7th International Copyright Symposium
During the Frankfurt Book Fair 2008 the Executive Committee of IPA examined the applications of a number of candidates applying to be the host of IPA’s quadrennial international copyright event. In the end Abu Dhabi was chosen as the host of the IPA’s 7th International Copyright Symposium. Partners of IPA in organising this conference are the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) as well as the Arab Publishers Association. A UAE Publishers Association in Abu Dhabi is currently being formed.

Hachette to launch in India
HACHETTE LIVRE UK is joining rivals Random House, Penguin and Macmillan in establishing a wholly owned publishing company to chase the fast-growing tiger economy in India.
